Before I present my new list please bear with me for a few seconds. I have been hacked and lost ownership of Metalised page, which is the Facebook page of my Blog (not hacked). I created this page 11 years ago and has been a labor of love. I can still post but I don’t know what the hacker’s intentions are. I have written several times to Facebook about this matter but of course nobody replies.  I have created a backup page called Metalised Life so please head on there and follow it: https://www.facebook.com/Metalised-Life-112985154608128

But now, on with the main event.

Each year it seems like it will be impossible to top the previous year, but 2021 yielded another fine crop of incredible additions to the metal canon! Something evident from the exceptional quality of all the albums included in my list.

I have been going through this list for quite some time now (edited & updated throughout the whole year) and the albums, songs, videos etc. that made the list and their final rankings are the result of hard thinking and repeated listening/headbanging sessions! Rankings were determined by the level of musicianship, song writing, creativity, production, artwork, but above all from what I jokingly like to call “The Goosebumps Meter” which is the intensity of goosebumps given to me from each album!

I truly scan the whole planet to find the best new music for you! But keep in mind that, although I have listened to almost 600 of new releases during the last 12 months (I kid you not!), it is virtually impossible for anyone to listen to all the new Metal, Hard Rock & Progressive Rock releases in a year. Furthermore, this list had to be shortened to what I believe were the most essential ones. So apologies in advance, if in your opinion some important albums have been omitted, but feel free to leave a comment with your favorite albums from 2021.

Here are Metalised’s best Metal & Progressive Rock albums and also songs, videos etc. of 2021, presented without boring reviews that nobody bothers to read anyway!

Although 2010 was one of the worst years ever concerning Metal releases, 2011 has truly been one of the best ones with spectacular releases, at times reminiscent of the glorious 80′s, Metal’s “golden decade”. These are the best Metal albums of 2011:

1. Machine Head – Unto The Locust

No one ever thought they could top “The Blackening” but they proved us all wrong! They have musically surpassed themselves and anyone else in the music industry. This is an album with a lot of diversity and clearly a step forward for Machine Head. Even the album opener, a sonata with three movements or “Who We Are” with the children’s choir, that consists of the band members’ children, and all the acoustic parts in this album, work wonders with their typical groove thrash sound. Moreover, the addition of Flynn’s clean vocals works in favour of the whole album’s progressive epic feeling! Such a sweet Thrashtastic release…!

2. Myrath – Tales of the Sands

The first and only Metal band from Tunisia managed to form and evolve in an unfavourable environment to give to the Metal world a new sub-genre called Oriental Metal! Listen to this magnificent album, it is a marriage made in Heaven, of Progressive Metal with Middle Eastern music… and believe me they do it with class! This is music that makes you want to dance! Headbanging while belly dancing anyone…?!!!

3. Trivium – In Waves

Almost 7 years ago Trivium were described by most of the Metal media publications as the future of metal. Well guess what? They were all right! In Waves is their 4thmasterpiece (not including their début) and it is a positive, refreshing and uplifting Metalcore album that you never get bored of listening to, with too many stand out tracks from the mighty “In Waves” to the crushing “Inception of the End” to the fiery menace of “Dusk Dismantled” to the epic “Caustic Are The Ties That Bind” on to the grandeur of  “A Skyline’s Severance”. Get the special edition with the extra tracks, it is well worth the price alone for ”Drowning In Slow Motion” and the cover of Sepultura’s ”Slave New World”. All together now: IIIIIN WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVES…

4. While Heaven Wept – Fear of Infinity

Wow… simply wow… mesmerizing would be the right word to describe this! I am talking about music that transcends you to beautiful, colourful, dreamy, sonic journeys! This is a must have album for every self-respecting Metal aficionado! Listen to this album with a bottle of good red wine, at full volume, lights dimmed and with eyes closed…

5. Leprous – Bilateral

Product Details

Leprous is a new Norwegian band, perfectly blending progressive rock with jazz, avant-garde, pop, black and progressive metal. Leprous is chosen as backing band for former Emperor frontman and countryman Ihsahn, who also makes a guest appearance in this album on the track ‘Thorn’. ‘Bilateral’ sounds like a mix of some of the best progressive rock/metal bands, such as Opeth, Riverside, Pain of Salvation, Pink Floyd, Porcupine Tree and Devin Townsend! Everything about this album from the music, to the artwork, to the production is truly brilliant! Leprous is the future of progressive rock/metal! Leprous is absolutely 100% Metalised Approved!

6. Megadeth – Thirteen

It is really hard for Megadeth to release a bad album and Thirteen is no exception to that rule! Megadeth is one of the most consistent and talented bands in the history of Metal…

7. Dream Theater – A Dramatic Turn of Events

The name alone is a guarantee of quality music… Dream Theater… enough said!!!

8. Iced Earth – Dystopia

Excellent album and one of the greatest comeback albums ever! Stu Block, the new vocalist, has a given a breath of fresh air into the band! Watch below how excellent he is Live… and check out the impressive band entrance onto the stage… and the obsessive adoration of their fans… and… oh, just go ahead and watch the bloody video…

9. Korn – The Path of Totality

Korn with this album gave birth to Metalstep, by combining Metal with Dubstep, with unexpectedly jaw-dropping results! They are the first band ever in the 40 year history of Metal to have given birth to two Metal sub-genres: Metalstep and Nu-Metal of course. Just listen to the songs ”Get Up!”, ”Narcissistic Cannibal” and ”Chaos Lives In Everything”… what a great, innovating album this is! People who only listen to 80′s Metal should avoid this release… open minded people will for sure thoroughly enjoy it… and dance to it!

10. Symphony X – Iconoclast

Symphony X with this release prove once more that they are definitely one of the top 3 Progressive Metal bands right now. ”Iconoclast” is an album with tons of inspiration and HUGE BALLS OF STEEL!!!

11. Mastodon – The Hunter

Although I prefer the Mastodon of ‘Leviathan’ and ‘Blood Mountain’, they managed again to redefine their sound and offer us yet another critically acclaimed and amazing album.

12. Arch/Matheos – Sympathetic Resonance

Product Details

Jim Matheos and John Arch in 2011 collaborate once again since the latter left Fates Warning, to give us something fresh, heady and actually pretty heavy as well! Sympathetic Resonance is an album for the Metal connoisseurs and definitely one of the best Progressive Metal albums of 2011!

13. The Browning – Burn This World

 Product Details

The Browning’s debut album is absolutely unique and a breath of fresh air, something that is always needed in Metal and the music industry in general, i like to believe. Clearly they are following the trend created by Asking Alexandria,  by fusing European Techno with Metalcore, but with the difference that these guys can actually compose decent songs. Just listen to ‘Time Will Tell’ and if  at the end of it you hadn’t  felt that the earth just shook under your feet, then please do us a favour and change musical preferences… try R&B perhaps! Check out online also the stunning video clip for their single ‘Bloodlust’. These kids are pouring their souls into their performance, i can almost feel their youthful angst and this assures me that they will be amazing live!

14. Revocation – Chaos of Forms

new

Revocation return with a new album of masterful modern metal in Chaos of Forms. Unforgettable songs bend, stop, twist, and shred at virtuosic levels while exploding with frenetic energy. As future classics Cradle Robber, Dissolution Ritual, No Funeral, Cretin and more show, each aspect of the band has been honed to deadly perfection and brings to fruition the promise that the previous full-length Existence Is Futile hinted at. Chaos of Forms proves beyond doubt that Revocation are masters of their craft and metal s finest new band.

15. Anthrax – Worship Music

Finally! They are back with a vengeance with a dynamite album to consolidate their position as part of the Big 4 of Thrash, along with Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer. Worship Music was well worth the 8 year wait by their fans all over the world and definitely one of the best albums of their career! Kudos to Scot Ian and Joey Belladonna who made their selves relevant and irreplaceable once again in the Global Metal Community…

16. Vektor – Outer Isolation

Vektor is easily the best new band right now and definitely the best one out of the new wave of Thrash. This is a must have for every self respecting thrasher…. not since the early 90′s a Thrash album of such aural excellence has been released… it is that good! Trust me…

17. Abysmal Dawn – Leveling the Plane of Existence

Modern Technical Death Metal with catchy memorable riffs. I haven’t listened to such an exciting Death Metal album since Death’s ‘The Sound Of Perseverance’, 14 years ago…

18. Cavalera Conspiracy – Blunt Force Trauma

I listen to this album in my ipod while working out at the gym and I dare say that the energy it gives me, I can only assume is similar to the one steroids give to body-builders! However, without the life threatening and body deteriorating side effects (well, just the ears maybe…)! Moral of this story: Don’t use steroids, use Cavalera Conspiracy! I rest my case…

19.  Devin Townsend – Deconstruction & Ghost

Deconstruction is a humorous and chaotic album just like Townsend’s personality is! Only him could add a choir and an orchestra to an already over the top wall of sound of Progressive and Industrial Metal with such astonishing results! Ghost, on the other hand, is the yang to Deconstruction’s yin! There is a thin line between insanity and genius and Devin Townsend is the living proof of that…

20. Nightwish – Imaginaerum

Epic… Epic… Epic!!! Metal meets Opera, meets Folk music, meets… Abba!!! If classical music was invented in the 21st century this is how it would sound like. This new album may be not as brilliant as some of their past efforts, nevertheless this is simply delicious music…!

  1. Arrayan Path – Ira Imperium

  2. Amon Amarth – Surtur Rising

  3. Stratovarius – Elysium

  4. Turisas – Stand Up and Fight

  5. Animals as Leaders – Weightless

  6. Voyager – The Meaning of I

  7. Moonsorrow – Varjoina Kuljemme Kuolleiden Maassa

  8. Arch Enemy – Khaos Legions

  9. Decapitated – Carnival is Forever

  10. Limp Bizkit – Gold Cobra

  16. Amebix – Sonic Mass

  17. Scale the Summit – The Collective

  18. Born of Osiris – The Discovery

  19. Whitesnake – Forevermore

  20. Amorphis – The Beginning of Times

The Top 5 Songs of 2011:

1. Trivium – In Waves

2. Machine Head – Locust

3. While Heaven Wept – Hour of Reprisal

4. Dream Theater – On the Backs of Angels

5. Amon Amarth – War of the Gods (also check out their breathtaking cover of ”Aerials”)

Most Disgustingly Annoying, Vomit-Inducing Album of 2011!!!

  • Nickelback – Here & Now

Biggest Disappointment of 2011:

  • Metallica with Lou Reed – Lulu

What SHIT of an album that is!

2012 Releases that I can’t wait for…

  • Van Halen (David Lee Roth is back!)
  • Moonspell
  • Gojira

  • Alice in Chains

  • Lamb of God

  • Testament

  • Accept

  • Epica

Now, if only my true love System of a Down would finally release a new album too……

It is obvious that Mastodon’s The Hunter was the big winner among the Rock/Metal Magazines. I dare say that these lists are a bit weird and they give me the impression that each magazine was trying to ‘promote’ certain bands! Metalised’s list of the best Metal albums of 2011 is more reasonable and ‘balanced’ in my opinion, but then again I may be subjective about this 😉 I do believe though, that Metalised’s list takes into account bands from all genres of Metal and the quality of  the music was the only factor for compiling this list. Moreover, the bands’ countries of origin was NOT a criterion for choosing them, as clearly this is the case for some of the magazines! UK Metal Hammer anyone? 😉

Check out the post about the best Metal albums of 2011 according to Metalised:
